Our History

A Legacy of Enzyme Innovation

A few of the moments that shaped who we are and where we’re headed next.

  1. 1920

    Dr. Edward Howell’s Early Discovery

As a young physician at Lindlahr Sanitarium, Dr. Howell observed that cooking and processing diminish natural food enzymes and that diet alone often lacks the enzymatic support needed for optimal health. Those observations sparked a six-year immersion in “nature cure” medicine and a lifelong research focus on nutritional enzymes. He concluded that effective supplementation should support digestion across all macronutrients—protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fiber.

  2. 1932

    National Enzyme Company is Founded

Collaborating with food enzymologists, Howell developed Genuine N•Zimes®, the first full-spectrum digestive enzyme supplement formulated to address mixed, cooked meals. He founded National Enzyme Company (NEC) to manufacture and distribute these products to patients and the public, helping pioneer the modern use of non-animal enzymes in nutrition.

  3. 1980

    Dr. Howell's Research Archive

By 1980, NEC had consolidated Dr. Howell’s extensive clinical and scientific research on non-animal enzymes, preserving decades of insights just prior to his passing in 1988. This archive became a foundational resource guiding future innovation in evidence-informed enzyme supplementation.

  4. 1985

    Enzymes Inc. is Founded

Advances in non-animal enzyme extraction enabled professional-strength formulations, and NESS® (Nutritional Enzyme Support System) debuted for licensed practitioners. That same year, Enzymes Inc. (formerly International Enzyme Foundation) was established to develop, manufacture, market, and distribute NESS® and other enzyme products, often combining enzymes with probiotics and herbal/whole-food concentrates to enhance clinical effectiveness.

  5. 1987

    Leadership Expansion

Lynn Greaves joined Enzymes Inc. and NEC in 1987, bringing a biochemistry and business background and a decade of product development, technical services, and marketing experience. She rose to Vice President of both companies, helping drive growth, strengthen practitioner relationships, and elevate product quality.

  6. 1998

    Clinical Trials on InflammEnz™

Enzymes Inc. began the first of three clinical trials evaluating InflammEnz™ (formerly EnzAid), a proprietary blend of anti-inflammatory proteolytic enzymes, for post-operative recovery. Across studies, the formula demonstrated reductions in bruising, edema, and discomfort, with results accepted for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals.

  7. 1999

    ProSol™ is Created

With industry demand rising a team of physicians and biochemists developed ProSol™, a professional line combining broad-spectrum non-animal enzymes with targeted botanicals, antioxidant phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals supported by extensive practitioner education at seminars and conventions.

  8. 2000

    Facility Growth & Ownership

Enzymes Inc. moved into a larger Parkville, Missouri facility and, in a strategic milestone, Lynn and Jim Greaves acquired Enzymes Inc. along with Dr. Howell’s Genuine N•Zimes® line, forming an alliance with NEC.

  9. 2004

    Peer-Reviewed Validation

A University of Texas Southwestern Medical School study, published in a leading medical journal, further substantiated pHysioProtease®’s effectiveness. As a key component of InflammEnz™, it demonstrated a meaningful role in accelerating wound healing and soft-tissue repair.

  10. 2012

    Facility Growth & Relocation

To support continued growth, Enzymes Inc. purchased a 35,000-sq-ft facility and welcomed Bryan Greaves as Vice President, aligning leadership and infrastructure to scale manufacturing, quality systems, and technical services.

  11. 2016

    Packaging Facility Completed

A state-of-the-art packaging facility came online, adding flexible bottling formats, increasing throughput, and tightening in-house control over quality and timelines from blending to finished goods.

  12. 2019

    In-House Manufacturing Completed

To complement our packaging expansion, we commissioned an in-house manufacturing facility, bringing more production steps under one roof to tighten GMP control, improve traceability, reduce lead times, and expand capacity for both brand and private-label runs.

  13. 2020

    ProSol™ Becomes ProEnzol®

Our practitioner line transitioned from ProSol™ to ProEnzol®, unifying the portfolio under a stronger master brand while preserving proven formulations and enhancing clinician resources, labeling clarity, and education for evidence-based use in practice.

  14. FUTURE

    The Next Decade of Innovation

We’ll deepen clinical collaborations and R&D on non-animal digestive and systemic enzymes, expand practitioner education (including digital learning), advance quality systems and sustainable operations, and broaden people-and-pet solutions that deliver reliable, measurable outcomes.
